Dr. Karen Jennings Mathis

she/her

I am an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in the Warren Alpert Medical School and Research Scientist at the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital. At The Mathis Lab, I am the principal investigator and lead researcher.

My program of research focuses on how stress and systemic inequities impact health risk behaviors in adolescents and young adults, with a focus on Black and Brown populations. My recent work aims to integrate qualitative research with biomarkers and intensive longitudinal methods. My ultimate goal is to improve evidence-based assessments and treatments to be more culturally sensitive and relevant. I am also a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

My interests include hiking and being outdoors, cooking dinner or baking cookies with friends and family, playing with my almost one year old son, watching movies, and reading a good book.
