Idea-ba study

We would like to find out more about how Black youth (14-17 year olds) experience discrimination and how these experiences influence their behaviors.

what to expect

Screening call

During this 30-minute Zoom meeting, we will confirm your eligibility. Then, we will review the risks and benefits for participating in this research study, the next steps, and answer any questions you have.

After we review these details and you understand the study in its entirety, you can decide whether or not you would like to enroll.

online survey

Once you enroll, we will schedule your focus group or interview. Prior to the focus group or interview, you will be asked to complete an online survey.

This survey should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. You will be asked a series of multiple choice questions related to your demographics, background, prior experiences, and behaviors. It is done independently and at your own pace. We only ask that it is completed prior to your interview or focus group.

interview or focus group

The final part of the study gives you a judgement-free space to share your experiences with discrimination.

This can be done 1-on-1 with the research team or in a group setting with other participants (ages 14-17), it is your choice.

What you chose to share or not share is completely up to you.

You will be paid for completing each part of the study described above. You have the choice of either a Visa or Amazon e-gift card each time you complete a step.

More specific details on payment amounts will be shared in the screening call, prior to your enrollment.

  • Nope! Unless you tell them yourself.

Your privacy and confidentiality is very important to us. Given the sensitive nature of the topics we will be discussing, we will not share any information you share with us in online surveys or in conversation. The only exception is if you disclose that you are in immediate danger in which we have a duty to make sure you are safe.

No parental consent or signature is needed to participate so parents do not need to know you are participating, unless you want them to.

You will not get in any trouble for disclosing nicotine or cannabis use as that is not the purpose of this. We are not cops, we are researchers. We just want to understand why you engage in certain behaviors and how it helps you.

  • Findings from this research will help us better understand how the intersectional experiences of Black youth impact health behaviors.

This information will be used to develop tailored interventions and inform mental healthcare to best serve BIPOC youth and reduce health disparities.
