We would like to find out more about how Black youth (14-17 years old) experience discrimination and how these experiences influence their behaviors.

what to expect

Study VISIT

Once your eligibility is confirmed, the team will reach out to schedule your one-hour in-person visit at our Providence office.

The purpose of the visit is to review the study in depth, receive your and your parent/guardian’s written consent to proceed, and orient you to the app you will be using throughout the study.

After completing a baseline survey, we will assist you with downloading the app and going over how to use it for the study. You will also receive a manual with detailed instructions on how and when to use the app, along with troubleshooting information for any issues.

By the end, you will know exactly what to expect, when prompts will arrive, and who to contact if you need help. You will be paid for your time.

DAILY CHECK-INS

For 14 days in a row, you will complete two scheduled check-ins per day. You will complete one after school and one before bed.

Each check-in should take less than 5 minutes to complete. You will have a 2-hour window to complete before it is marked missing. If you don’t respond right away, the app sends two reminder notifications.

You will be paid for completing these scheduled surveys and receive a bonus payment if you complete 80% or more.

On Demand surveys

You will also have the option to complete check-ins outside of your scheduled survey windows if you experience discrimination and want to complete. These “on demand” surveys do not count toward your 80% and final amount compensated.

  • Yes!

    Participants are compensated for their time and have the opportunity to earn bonuses for completing the daily check-ins. Payment will be given at the completion of the orientation visit and after the completion of the mEMA period. The full payment details will be reviewed during the orientation visit before you begin.

  • Your privacy is very important to us. To participate, a parent or legal guardian will need to provide permission, accompany you for your orientation visit, and sign a consent form for you to participate.

    Because of this, your parent/guardian will know you are in the study. If you choose to share with others that you are involved in the study, that is completely up to you.

    With that said, we do not share your individual survey responses with your parent/guardian or anyone else. Your answers are kept confidential and are used for research purposes.

    Because some questions may be sensitive, we also want you to know: your responses will not get you in trouble. We’re not here to judge or punish anyone — we are researchers trying to understand experiences and behaviors over time.

  • Findings from this research will help us better understand how the intersectional experiences of Black youth impact health behaviors.

    This information will be used to develop tailored interventions and inform mental healthcare to best serve BIPOC youth and reduce health disparities.

  • From your orientation visit, your participation in the study will last 14 consecutive days. After that, you will be paid for your survey completion, and your time in the study will be over.
